Celebrate Juneteenth Across the Greater Lynchburg Region

As we enter into the month of June, we celebrate the history of Juneteenth in a place that signifies the beginning of an end. Appomattox, Virginia has a unique connection to Juneteenth as it was the location of the first set of enslaved people that were freed on April 9, 1865. 

Peer-to-Peer Lunch and Learn with Mission Thrift

We will gather at the Freedom 4/24 and Sports Outreach Meeting Room (2306 Bedford Ave.) for lunch and a time of sharing, followed by a collaborative presentation on the Mission Thrift model, vision and plan. We will conclude by walking across the street for a behind-the-scenes tour of Mission Thrift. Lunch will be provided by SHARE Greater Lynchburg.

SML Good Neighbors Cares for Children of Bedford and Franklin Counties

Nestled in the heart of Smith Mountain Lake sits a nonprofit organization by the name of SML Good Neighbors. Year-round, SML Good Neighbors serves the children in Franklin and Bedford counties by teaching them good neighbor skills and setting them up for success. 

One of the organization’s summer goals is to prevent summer learning loss, also known as the ‘summer slide.’ 

Peer-to-Peer Lunch and Learn with Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg

We will gather at the GLTC Transfer Station Meeting Room (800 Kemper St, Lynchburg, VA 24501) for lunch and a time of sharing, followed by a presentation by Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg. The topic will be volunteer recruitment, appreciation and retention and Meals on Wheels is preparing takeaway tools for attendees.

CVACL Supports Seniors with 'Taste of the Derby' on May 6

After a two year COVID hiatus, the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living (CVACL)  is back for its ‘Taste of the Derby’ party on Saturday, May 6 from 4-9pm.

The party is the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year, completely sponsored so that money earned from ticket sales goes right back to supporting the organization’s programs. 

Local College Volunteers Collaborate to Plant Food Forest

As a senior environmental science major at Randolph College, Eva Hey decided that she wanted to make a difference in her community for her senior project. After studying a heat map to determine what areas are in the highest heat index, Hey settled on the neighborhood of her former elementary school, R.S. Payne Elementary. 

One Community, One Voice is Fueled by Volunteers and Dedication

After Lynchburg native, Dr. James Camm returned home from working in Alaska, he looked around his Lynchburg community to find that many of the problems were still present as they were before he relocated. 

As the founder and pastor of Living Word Ministries, Camm decided that through the church, some of these issues facing the community could be remedied, thus One Community, One Voice (OCOV) was started. 

Mary Bethune Academy Reaps Benefits from Day of Caring

For the past 30 years, the United Way of Central Virginia has hosted Day of Caring, a day in which companies from the greater Lynchburg area take off from the work day and volunteer that time to assist local nonprofits. 

One of these nonprofits, who has been a long term partner of United Way CV, is the Mary Bethune Academy, a children’s care center for children aged six weeks to five years old. 

Peer-to-Peer Lunch and Learn at Park View Community Mission

On Wednesday, April 19 from 12-1:30pm, we will gather at Park View Community Mission's Life Skills Institute (2323 Memorial Ave, Suite 26) for lunch and a time of sharing, followed by a presentation and tour.

Come take a deep dive on Park View Community Mission's six programs. You will leave with a thorough understanding of what PVCM offers, the referral processes, and how we, as nonprofit partners, can best collaborate together to strengthen our community.
