The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg Seeks Volunteers to Claim 700 Red Kettle Bell Ringing Hours

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg is working to meet the needs of those in our community who are suffering by extending hope where there is none. This year, The Salvation Army of Lynchburg provided:

  • 32,000 hot meals
  • 572 people with shelter
  • More than 12,900 needs of food, pantry items, financial assistance, and social services were met through our Family Services Program
  • 1,557 children and families love beyond despair through Angel Tree and other holiday activities
  • Youth enrichment programs and camp opportunities for at-risk youth and spiritual development.

Miki McGarry, the new Development Director for The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg, joined us on The Mike Show this week for an inspiring interview. She is reviving a role that has been vacant for four years at The Salvation Army and eager to engage in community conversations and partnerships. She said, "The Salvation Army offers services 365 days a year and a good chunk of our budget comes from what we raise during the holiday season through the Red Kettle Bell Ringing Campaign." She has successfully filled 50% of the kettle ringing spots, but had about 700 more to go!Red Kettle Bell Ringing

The Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army's annual fundraising effort, supporting local programs that provide food, shelter, and assistance to those in need. Volunteers play a key role by ringing bells at kettle locations throughout the community, inviting donations that help change lives. By volunteering your time, you become a vital part of this tradition, directly contributing to the impact we can make in the Lynchburg area during the holiday season. Every hour you serve helps bring hope and support to families facing hardships.

Individual volunteer shifts are two (2) hours long each, beginning November 29 through December 24 (Christmas Eve).  Families are welcome to ring together. Children and youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups are also welcome to take a day, and fill the six shifts with volunteers from their group!

Angel Tree Toy Warehouse

The Angel Tree Program is a special holiday initiative of The Salvation Army, dedicated to bringing Christmas joy to children and families in need. Through generous donations, The Salvation Army provides gifts to children who might otherwise go without. Volunteers are essential to making this program a success, and there are several ways for you to get involved:

  • Sorting & Packing Toys (Dec 16-19): Volunteers are needed to sort, organize, and pack the gifts according to each child’s wish list, ensuring that everything is ready for Distribution Day.
  • Distribution Day (Dec 20): Assist with the exciting day when families come to pick up their gifts, spreading joy and ensuring a smooth, organized process.

Your time and support make a difference, helping us bring the spirit of Christmas to families in the Lynchburg community!
