Written by Alyssa Wilson, University of Lynchburg Bonner Intern

Amherst Glebe Arts Response, Inc. (AGAR) is on a mission to provide arts and entertainment that is accessible to all. Through their low-price tickets and Virginia Commission for the Arts’(VCA) PASSPORT partnership, anyone in the community can enjoy upcoming musical performances.

AGAR’s next performance will take place this Saturday, Feb. 17th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Second Stage Amherst, 194 Second Street, Amherst, VA and has a Valentine’s Day theme. The show features jazz singer Donna Kay and pianist Laurabella Owens, who call themselves Belladonna, accompanied by bassist Bob Bowen and drummer Worth Proffitt.  The group will be performing a program titled  Love Me or Leave Me: Prohibition-era music from the 1930s.

Community members can find more information HERE, or buy tickets at the door (cash & checks only) starting at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students and free for VCA PASSPORT holders with WIC Cards (recommended for mothers and children 12-18).

The VCA  and the Virginia Health Department work with arts presenters and WIC (Women, Infants, Children program) to offer free or low cost entertainment and arts opportunities to families who receive WIC benefits.

The next event AGAR will be hosting will take place on February 24th at Second Stage Amherst at 7:30 p.m. The internationally renowned Baltimore Consort will perform a show titled The Food of Love - Song, Dances and Fancies for Shakespeare.

Consort members sing and play on unusual and beautiful early instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries with which audiences may not be familiar: viol, cittern, krummhorns, gemshorn, recorder, fife, bagpipe and lute. Grammy nominated Ronn McFarlane leads the group and soprano Danielle Svonavec sings. To reserve tickets for the upcoming event, visit HERE.

The Greater Lynchburg Foundation is a proud sponsor of both upcoming events. AGAR hosts programs and events throughout the year. Keep up to date by visiting their SHARE Greater Lynchburg profile.  To hear AGAR interviewed on The Mike Show, visit HERE.
