New and Improved Amherst Location Grows Johnson Health Center Community
Written by Alyssa Wilson, University of Lynchburg Bonner Intern
With multiple locations across Lynchburg and its surrounding counties, Johnson Health Center has been providing access to quality health care for vulnerable populations in the area for 25 years as a federally qualified health center (FQHC).
Ten years ago the first Amherst health center was established, but quickly began to outgrow itself, leaving little room for staff and patients. Several years ago Johnson Health Center took advantage of a “Land for Sale” sign next to the current property and started breaking ground on a new and improved facility.
The new site is 22,000 square feet offering plenty of space for patients to get their health needs met. All services will be offered under one roof: adult medical care, pediatrics, dental, behavioral health, OB/GYN and drive-thru pharmacy.
In addition to their normal service offerings the new location houses a gym for staff and patients as well as a teaching kitchen to show community members the importance of healthy eating.
In past years Johnson Health has served 28,000 patients and had about 100,000 visits per year. With a new and larger Amherst location, more vulnerable community members can be served.
Although an official opening ceremony will take place in September, the health center will be open for medical patients starting June 3 and dental patients will begin to be seen on June 17.
This year’s 10th Annual Back to School Care Fair and Community Open House will be held at the new Amherst location. Community members can receive free school supplies and handouts from Johnson Health Center and other community partners. Participants will have an opportunity to tour the new facility and meet its staff and providers.
