reMind, Body, and Soul: Sattva Yoga and Wellness Center's Celebration and Relocation
Written by Anna Dodge, James Madison University Summer 2024 Intern

Sattva Yoga and Wellness Center started in October of 2022 in the old Gateway building located at 300 12th Street. They have a yoga studio on the first floor and health and wellness coaches on the upper floors.

“Covid uncovered a need for working with people to create a community again, and to deal with isolation and depression. So we started this nonprofit with the idea of gathering community and providing yoga, meditation, and different services that people might need just to help them get their feet back on the ground after Covid,” said Gary Sullivan, the Founder and CEO of Sattva Yoga Center.

This location has been perfect for the last few years, but due to unforeseen circumstances Sattva is temporarily relocating. The new location will be located at 311 Rivermont Avenue and will be open starting September 1st. Sattva is partnering with Mind Body Studio, the oldest yoga studio in Lynchburg, to make this dream a reality.

In the last two years that Sattva has been up and running, they have served over 200 people to help them become more in tune with themselves. The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation has provided grant funding for both years of operations, including funding to support “Yoga for Veterans” weekly classes and activities.  Funds have also been used for addiction recovery support services,  community events, and group counseling for families and children.

“We come to this space as we are, loving and accepting ourselves as we are. But we all know we have things to work on. We may have past trauma or experiences in our lives that are causing us difficulty. So what we do is we use yoga and meditation as tools to reground ourselves in the present moment and really to find ourselves once again,” said Sullivan.

To celebrate the end of the chapter that Sattva has had in their current building, they are hosting a fundraiser on Saturday,  August 3rd. The event is called, “Music and Mindfulness” and will offer a variety of events for anyone to enjoy! The cost is $15 if you order your tickets in advance and $20 at the door. Donations are welcome and greatly appreciated.  There will be live music,  refreshments, fun activities, and drawing for a one year membership and other donated items.

In addition to a monetary donation, you can donate your time to help Sattva clean their new location and move their furniture and such when the time comes. You can find more information about volunteering with Sattva on their SHARE page.
