Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

Volunteer Opportunity:
Tour Docent
I'm Interested!

Do you have a love of history? Are you interested in talking to visitors about an important historical figure, his retreat home, and the enslaved and free people who lived and worked at Poplar Forest? Then becoming a tour docent at Poplar Forest may be right for you! Tour docents at Poplar Forest led two, hour-long guided tours through Thomas Jefferson's retreat home per shift. In addition, tour docents also lead  specialty tours such as Holiday Candlelight Tours, Enslaved Community Talks and other tours if interested.

To become a volunteer at Poplar Forest, you must complete a training program to prepare you for your volunteer position. Volunteers should be willing to work a minimum of six hours (or two shifts) per month during the tour season (mid-March through December 30).
