Patrick Henry's Red Hill

Volunteer Opportunity:
Come dig with us!

This opportunity has passed.

Have you ever wondered what else remains to be discovered under the red soil of these grounds? What other stories might be uncovered? Starting in May 2023, Red Hill will be looking into these questions with on-site archaeological research!

Fieldwork in 2023 will explore an area northwest of the Henry House where several early 20th century structures used to stand, including a domestic building, an icehouse, and a kitchen. By starting archaeology in this area, we’re hoping to learn more about the people who lived in and used these spaces. Findings from this project will help us expand the Red Hill narrative to include more information about sharecroppers who lived here until the mid-20th century.

Digging deeper into Red Hill’s history will require some extra hands, which is why we’re opening up volunteer opportunities to anyone interested in participating in archaeology. During the summer, volunteers will help with excavation, while in the winter, they’ll assist with artifact processing. Equipment and guidance from archaeologists will be provided. Whether you come dig with us for a single day or volunteer on a weekly basis, you’ll have the chance to engage hands-on with history and help uncover more of Red Hill’s story.
