What We Do
UMFS is a nonprofit agency that provides a comprehensive array of programs to meet the needs of high-risk children and parents to enable them to overcome challenging circumstances and succeed. We work closely with the Department of Social Services to place children and teens in our Treatment Foster Care Program.
Treatment Foster Care is the provision of a safe, nurturing, and structured home environment, for children and teens with emotional, behavioral, or social challenges or medical needs, as well as those who have experienced multiple placements and/or previous traumatic experiences within the foster care system. Our Foster Parents receive training on how to provide therapeutic parenting and trauma-informed care.
We are a passionate organization that has been around the block. Established in 1900 as an orphanage, UMFS has been a foundational member of Virginia communities for 120 years. Our Southwest region serves children and families throughout Lynchburg, South Hill, Farmville, and surrounding areas.
Our core values are:
1. Passion unleashes greatness
2. Relationships are our building blocks
3. Start with strengths-always
4. Collaboration multiplies impact
5. Relentlessly pursue solutions
