My Journey: From Struggle to Hope
My name is Kirsten, and my journey through addiction and recovery is one I never imagined I would face. But it’s a story I share today because I know how important it is to show others that there is hope, even when the path feels impossible.
Like many, I turned to substances as a way to numb the pain and cope with life’s challenges. Addiction took control of my life, and soon, it began to destroy everything I held dear—most heartbreakingly, my life with my children when they were taken,  I hit rock bottom. I knew I needed help, so I made the choice to enter rehab. I wanted to change. I wanted to fight for my children, to be the parent they deserved, to give them the life I could never give them while I was in active addiction.
But recovery wasn’t as simple as just getting clean. It’s not just about staying sober—it’s about rebuilding your entire life from the ground up. After rehab, I moved into a sober living house, where I thought I could finally begin  with. QQ.  to heal and had court soon.. But even with that determination, the road was not smooth. I still faced the crushing weight of homelessness. I couldn’t secure stable housing, I had a job, but most importantly, I couldn’t show the system that I had the resources to care for my children.
Despite everything I was doing to stay clean, despite the hope in my heart, the system took my children away because I didn’t have the support I needed to prove I was capable of providing for them. The lack of resources and stability was a barrier I couldn’t overcome alone. The pain of losing my children was beyond words, but it was also the turning point that motivated me to create change—not just for myself, but for others facing the same struggles.
I realized that no one should have to fight addiction and recovery alone, and no parent should lose their children because they don’t have the proper support. I wanted to make sure that what happened to me didn’t happen to others—families who are fighting to regain custody, who are struggling to find housing, jobs, and transportation, and who need a place where they can rebuild their lives in safety and stability.
That’s why I founded SecondChanceFamilies project I want to offer families the resources and support I didn’t have when I was fighting for my children. Through transitional housing, job training, family therapy, and transportation assistance, we will provide the tools that families need to rebuild their lives. Our mission is to ensure that no family has to go through the devastating experience of being separated because of a lack of resources, and that every parent has the opportunity to fight for their family’s future.
I know the road to recovery is long, but I also know it’s possible. I am living proof that with the right support, families can heal and reunite. That’s why I’m committed to helping others find their way, just as I am still finding mine. We are stronger together, and with the right help, we can rebuild not just our families, but our communities, one second chance at a time.

WHY THIS CAUSE MATTERS

For parents in recovery, the challenges extend far beyond overcoming substance use—they often face systemic barriers like homelessness, lack of transportation, and minimal access to resources that could help them reunite with their children. These barriers prevent many parents from meeting court-mandated requirements, leaving them unable to regain custody despite their dedication to sobriety and recovery.

At Second Chance Families, we believe that every family deserves a fresh start and a strong support system to overcome life’s toughest challenges. Our mission is to provide families facing hardship—including those with open CPS cases, at risk of CPS intervention, experiencing housing instability, or facing homelessness—with the resources, stability, and opportunities they need to create a brighter future.

Through housing assistance, family advocacy, financial education, career development, and emotional support, we empower parents and children to break the cycle of crisis and build a foundation for lasting success. We are committed to restoring dignity, fostering resilience, and strengthening family bonds.
