What We Do

Our mission and our goal at the Bedford Humane Society, Inc. (BHS) is the elimination of pet overpopulation and suffering in the town and county of Bedford through education, spay/neuter programs, and pet adoptions as well as the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect through advocacy and humane education. Our vision is to build a caring community where no companion animal is born unwanted, where they are all happy, healthy, and well fed. All the animals with BHS are in foster homes so not only are they getting the care they need to get back on their feet, but also the attention and training to become a wonderful family member. Each has their own story that requires a personalized approach. While we don’t get the show animals that everyone flocks to, here they get a fresh start with us, a new beginning, and a whole new lease on life

Programs: The Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program subsidizes the cost of surgery for cats and dogs to pet owners who qualify under specific income guidelines. The goal of the program to reduce, over time, the number or dogs and cats that find their way into shelters and foster care.  A big thank you to our partner Angels of Assisi Veterinary Clinic to help us in our mission.

"Animeals" is our pet food pantry. It is designed to help families feed their companion animals when they are experiencing financial hardship. We want families to be able to keep their furry family members. "Animeals" is supported by generous donations from people in the Bedford community.

"Forgotten Felines" is a Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program that includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, and mite treatment for feral and free-roaming cats in and around the Bedford area.

We’ve partnered with Angels of Assisi, Blue Ridge Animal Hospital, Lake Forest Animal Hospital, Peaks View Animal Hospital, Riverside Veterinary Hospital, Smith Mountain Lake Animal Hospital, South Central Spay/Neuter Clinic and North Roanoke Veterinary Hospital  to perform the spay/neuter procedures. While our partner vets do this work at a discount, donations are always needed to help cover this service.

Bedford Humane Society is currently raising funds to build a shelter to house dogs and cats that have come to the Society for adoption. The shelter is in the design phase and a specific construction date has not been set. A significant portion of the funds have been generously provided by the estate of Mr. Lybolt. Please donate to help us build this shelter.
