On this year’s Giving Tuesday, anti-violence nonprofit The Peacemakers, Inc. Is officially opening its headquarters in Lynchburg, Va on Tuesday, November 28th, 2023. Since arriving in town around April of 2023, members of the nonprofit have taken intentional steps to bring an end to the senseless violence happening in our community. Holding an ‘Hour of Power’ every Sunday, Peacemakers walk streets recognized as high crime areas and interact with residents, offering resources such as free security cameras with free installation. These improvements help people feel safe and contribute to bringing back that neighborhood feeling.

Shawn Hunter, President and founder of the organization says, “This is what we have all done since we have been here. We have made a call to the community for them to come out and help; we pulled from within- we wish to highlight the companies who stepped up to the plate to get the job done. That’s why we honor them by putting their names on the wall, on our clothing and also by breaking bread with them. We needed the community's help, and everyone stepped up to the plate. We commend them. Without them, individuals and organizations alike, it wouldn’t have happened, but with them, here we are. All of us together show that ‘A Connected Community is a Safer Community’.”

At the grand opening of the conflict resolution center, beginning at 10:00 am, attendees can expect to hear from Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea Sr., & guest speaker Sherman Lea Jr., CEO of New Hope, President of The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice. Food will be provided by members of the Peacemakers, served to all at no charge.

Thanks to all who contributed to this endeavor including all three area Lowes: Bedford, Timberlake, and Madison Heights; their donation of lumber, drywall, doors, supplies, and more, ensured completion of the project. Sherwin Williams supplied all the paint needed to beautify the inside of the building as well as the outside. Not stopping there, they provided enough paint to beautify the neighboring buildings as well. Local muralist, Christina Davis, painted the Peacemakers logo on the exterior wall beginning a piece that will represent all who collaborate with the organization.
