LYH MLK Community Council -Virtual Event

Friends of Cosby Woods, we are pleased to virtually host the annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day organized by MLK Lynchburg Community Council, marking the 60th anniversary of Dr. King's visit to Lynchburg. On his visit to Lynchburg on March 27, 1962, Dr. King was served a meal at the Lodge of the Fishermen, where he was waited on by Bev Cosby, Larry Farmer, David Pollitz and others from the Church of the Covenant and Camp Kum-Ba-Yah. Dr. King was brought to Cosby Woods because the Cafe at the Lodge of the Fishermen (now called Common Grounds Cafe) was the first intentionally integrated public eatery in Lynchburg and our new Camp KBY swimming pools had enabled the first racially integrated swimming experience to take place in Lynchburg.

Revd. Dr. Virgil Wood, a lead pastor in the Lynchburg Civil Rights Movement in 1962 and the keynote speaker for this year's MLK Day event, told us he chose to bring Dr. King to Cosby Woods because of its reputation as an inclusive space where Dr. King could gather safely with African-American and white City leaders. “It was the most logical place to host Dr. King,” said Dr. Wood. A few hours after visiting Cosby Woods, Dr. King gave his now famous “American Dream” speech at E.C. Glass High School to encourage the integration efforts underway in Lynchburg.
